To promote Geographic Information Science and Technology in Japan, the research project on Geographic Information Sciences Education and Spatial Thinking (GIScEST project) is intended to research and develop teaching methods and study materials on geographical/ spatial thinking based on GISc Core Curriculum developed for systematic learning of GISc. This project is funded by The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).
Purpose of the research
 GIScEST project enhances GISc Core Curriculum and conducts following researches in partnership with GIS Association of Japan, The Association of Japanese Geographers, other related associations and The University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS);- Development of the GISc BoK (Body of knowledge) in accordance with the GISc Core Curriculum
- Research and development of educational contents such as text books
- Research and development of e-learning systems to learn educational contents on GISc
- Systematization of spatial thinking skills such as understanding and utilizing geospatial information
- Development of educational materials to develop spatial thinking skills not only in higher education but also in school education or lifelong learning
